On September 17, Cristosal, a human rights and transparency organization in El Salvador, announced that El Salvador’s public management and supervision agency will begin investigating complaints about the government’s purchase of bitcoin and encrypted ATMs. The authorization process is audited.

The supervisory authority has the power to impose administrative and asset sanctions and file criminal proceedings with the Office of the Attorney General.

The object of Cristosal’s complaint was the six members of the Bitcóin Trust board of directors, including members of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy, and members of the Secretariat of Commerce and Investment. “After acknowledging the complaint, the organization will continue to conduct a legal analysis report and forward the report to the General Audit and Coordination Bureau in a timely manner,” the Accounting Court said in an official document. An anonymous official confirmed that the complaint has been accepted.

In addition to sanctions against officials, the accounting court is also authorized to submit notices to the Attorney General’s Office to initiate criminal proceedings if violations are discovered during the investigation.
